Meet Priyanshu R Gupta

Hi! Nice to meet you!

You can learn more about me below and about some of my past projects in my Blog (under construction) as well as in the About me section and beyond.

Update 2/2/2022: My first manuscript with the Water Energy Lab on replacing RO with NF in textile wastewater treatment processes is out as a pre-print! Find it HERE! Do share your comments and feedback!

About Me

I'm an engineer that enjoys solving problems, exploring quirky ideas and playing football. I've moved around a bit between Mumbai, Muscat (Oman), Gandhinagar and even the industrial city of Vapi for a bit.
These days, you can find me in the IIT Bombay campus- either working on my Master's Thesis Project or playing football in/around Hostel 12.
I've  been fortunate to work on a wide range of projects - both engineering and otherwise (some of which you might find in my blog).

Three things that have occupied my mind these days are:

1. How to we save almost 20% of jaggery powder being manufactured daily from being lost due to case hardening? (also my masters Thesis)

2. How the human body and evolution gives us a brilliant template for designing futuristic robots.

3. How blessed we are to have discovered membranes!

About Me

Experience

What I’ve Done

December 2020 - Present

Tata Fellow, IIT Bombay

I am one of the 12 Tata Fellows selected to work on TCTD's sponsored projects, from the entire PG batch of 2020 at IIT Bombay. I'm working under the guidance of Prof. Sanjay Mahajani to develop a dryer for drying jaggery powder without compromising on product quality and taste. Currently, most jaggery makers sundry their products (a technique that takes almost 24-36 hours to complete).

February - August 2020

Junior Research Fellow, IIT Gandhinagar

I worked with Dr. Jaichander Swaminathan in the ME Department to understand the tradeoff between water production rate and the energy consumption for a rather nacent technology- Counter Flow Reverse Osmosis (CFRO A.K.A. Osmotically Assisted RO or OARO). However, the highlight of the experience was when I got a chance to work on the GALMobile, an RO system compacted to fit in the back of a pickup truck.

Two manuscripts are under preparation based on the work I did at the WEL.

The first one is out as a pre-print and can be found HERE!

June 2019 - January 2020

Management Trainee, Aarti Industries Ltd.

This was my first ever professional experience. I worked with the Operations Excellence team at AIL to monitor the productivity of their plants in the Sulphuric Acid Division. I prepared monthly reports highlighting the division's OEE, completion of RCAs and also conducted BBS rounds myself.
On the technical side, I also got a chance to learn and understand the operations of a 500TPD double-contact-double-absorption (DCDA) process in detail.

May 2018 - July 2018

Visiting Research Scholar, University of Saskatchewan

During the summer of 2018, I got a chance to work at Dr. Lee Wilson's lab in the Chemistry Dept. at UofS, Canada. I conducted numerous experiments to study how the polymer support composition affects the catalytic activity of the silver nanoparticles in the reduction of dyes. Purvil Jani et. al.  had shown that increasing the chitosan content of the polymer support improved the catalytic activity and reduced the reaction time for 4-nitrophenols. My work contradicted their results indicating lower chitosan works better for reducing methylene blue (perhaps because MB is a hydrophilic dye and both chitosan and 4NP are hydrophobic in nature). Here is the Poster that won the 'Special Mention' Award at the Undergraduate Research Conclave 2018 at IITGN.

Academic Experience

A history of my time at school

August 2020 - Present

Master of Technology, Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay

I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Chemical engineering at IIT Bombay, under the guidance of Prof. Sanjay Mahajani. So far, I've completed advanced courses on Transport Phenomena, Reaction Engineering, Thermodynamics, Statistics and also a course on Communication skills. My favorite one though was Product Research and Development by Prof. V. M. Naik - a course I'd recommend to every ChE student at IITB.
As of September 2021, I'm studying granular mechanics and process synthesis, both of which I believe will come of use in my project.

June 2015 - June 2019

Bachelor of Technology (Honors), Chemical Engineering

IIT Gandhinagar

In addition to the basic chemical engineering courses, I studied the Energy Efficient design of separation processes, Energy Systems and Biological Physics I also worked in Prof. Sameer Dalvi's lab for a couple of semesters, trying to synthesis curcumin nanoparticles to improve their loading in aqueous solutions.
I also explored courses beyond engineering- trying to understand how they view life. Courses on Evolutionary Neuropsychology, World History, the Psychology of Curiosity and a hint of Forensic chemistry.
My favorite moments though were either on the football field or hanging out with the 'Padosi's on the Emiet Balcony.

Academics
